Hat Care Essentials

Hat Care Guides

Your Trovador will ride with you through life’s rainy and sunny days. Keep it looking on point for decades with these simple care practices.

Handling

Its hard to hurt your 100% beaver hat, but its possible. Straws don't love water, but they swim better than you'd guess. Always handle your hat by the crown only. For felt hats, pick it up with one hand on the crown. For straw hats, use both hands on opposite sides of the crown to avoid creating a pinch or compromising integrity in a single area, which can eventually weaken the material. When handling the brim of cowboy hats, do so gently and softly — unless you’re intentionally reshaping it. Avoid smoke or anything that can transfer onto the felt, along with a full submerge or touching the bottom of the pool.

Storage

Store your hat on a wall hook, hat stand, or flat against the wall as art. Flat brim hats can be displayed flush against the wall or rested on their brim. Cowboy hats should be stored upside down, resting on the crown, so the brim stays free-floating and keeps its shape. Avoid stacking hats together when traveling and wear them on a plane. Pack em if you dare, just be ready for a reshape after. For best long-term protection, a hardshell TROVADOR case is ideal.

Cleaning

Use a horse hair brush to gently remove dust and dirt. Always brush a completely dry hat — never apply moisture to a dirty hat. Brush in a counterclockwise circular motion to lift out granules of dirt. If your hat gets wet (beaver felt is naturally water-resistant to light rain or drizzle), simply shake off the excess water and let it air dry naturally away from heat or direct sunlight.

Avoid extreme heat at all costs. Never leave your hat in a hot car or in prolonged direct sunlight, as the heat can cause it to shrink and no longer fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sizing and Measurements

When purchasing a new hat, it is important to be as accurate as possible with your head measurements to prevent getting a hat that is under or over-sized. You will need to measure your head using a measuring tape or find a friend to help.

To take your head measurement, place the tape around your head around where the hat will sit. This should roughly be about 1/8" above your ear, across the mid-forehead, and completely circling your head. Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size. All of our hats come sized and you can use this size guide to make your order.

For Custom Hat orders, you can visit our Design Studio in Austin, TX, to have your head professionally measured.
